Here’s the thing – you shouldn’t begin a job hunt unless you have some rough ideas around what you want: that absolutely includes salary expectations. Harry Joiner over at Marketing Headhunter.com makes a good point around this – know what you want, and know when to say “yes please.” I’ve had too many great candidates decide they can do better than their first offer – you have to view each opportunity one by one, not as part of some long discovery process. Knowing what to say yes to matters. Otherwise it’s just an ego-fishing expedition, and don’t you have better things to be doing?
