I was asked over the weekend what I look for in an objective, and I had a quick (if slightly contrary) answer – I don’t read objectives on resumes.  Mainly because objectives are dross, and I’m looking for the substance in the resume.  Once of my old managers used to say “Objective?  Isn’t your objective to get a job?”

If you need to put something at the start of your resume, make it a skills summary – something that shows not just what you know, but how you’ve used that knowledge, and that shows to your potential new employer that you’re the kind of person who can make things happen with their organization.
